5.2 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter

Using proper oil, and regularly checking, adding and changing oil will help extend the service life of your engine. Even the best oil wears out and becomes thinner. Changing oil helps get rid of dirt and deposits in the engine. Operating the engine with old or dirty oil may and may damage your engine. Running the engine with not enough oil can cause serious damage to your engine.

Engine Oil Recommended – SAE 10w40 / 10w-50 Motor Oil. *


 Indicates oil for regular air temperatures. Please see the oil/air temperature chart to help you choose the best oil for your climate.

 

CHECKING & ADDING OIL

  1. Stand the motorcycle upright on a horizontal surface. Remove the oil filler cap
  2. Engine is cold.

Check the engine oil level with the oil dip stick. Fig. 1

  1. Engine oil reaches the top notch of the level viewer - No need to add engine oil.
  2. Engine oil is in the middle or below of the level viewer - Need to add engine oil until it reaches the top notch of the level viewer.
  3. Engine is at operating temperature.

CHANGING OIL & OIL FILTER

  1. Park the motorcycle on a level surface.
  2. Place a suitable oil container under the engine.
  3. Remove the oil drain plug and the seal ring
  4. Let the oil drain out form the engine.

 

 

  1. Oil Filter Replacement
  2. Loosen & remove the oil filer cover be careful not to damage the O-ring. If it is damaged, it needs to be replaced.
  3. Pull out the oil filter from the filter housing.
  4. Completely drain the oil.
  5. Thoroughly clean the parts and sealing surfaces.
  6. Insert a new oil filter into the oil filter housing. Make sure it is seated properly.
  7. Oil the O-ring of the oil filter housing cover and install it back on to the filter housing.
  8. Tighten the filter cover.
  9. Stand the motorcycle back up.
  10. Remove the oil fill plug with the O-ring from the right side of the engine and fill with new engine oil.
  11. Install the oil fill plug with the O-ring.
  12. Start the engine and check for any leaks.
  13. Check the engine oil level with the dip stick. Don’t screw the dip stick back in. Just need to insert the dipstick and pull it back out to check the level.
